So proud of curating, along with my team, a juried, regional exhibition of art quilts from Studio Art Quilt Associates of Pennsylvania. Innovative fine art in the medium of quilting. This exhibition had a fabulous premiere at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, the summer of 2026, where professional installers helped our volunteer committee do great justice to these artworks. In mid September, the exhibition went on to the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza in Oaks, PA. Our team altered the arrangement to fit a series of curtained cells.
There were many traditional quilt guilds that took up the theme of our semiquincentennial. The contrasts with our art quilts were striking: patterns were symmetrical and based on patchwork blocks. Red, white, and blue flag palettes, plus lots of stars and stripes, heralded the auspicious anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, but went no further in commenting on the state of the union…except for that last patchwork quilt with a political message. Art quilt? Or a banner fit for carrying in a rally declaring independence in 2026?
