Red Cross Diptych

Red Cross Diptych

Starting with a commercial fabric with a motif of red crosses, I built this art quilt in two sections, adding:

  • a vintage bed sheet squeegeed, silk-screened, striated, and squirted with ochre and red thickened dyes
  • recycled, plasticized packaging from goat feed bags, single serve tea bag envelopes, and other food items
  • strip-sets from solid and striped fabric
  • circles cut from aluminum soda and beer cans
  • plastic mesh from citrus bags

Worked on during the pandemic, this piece came to represent the repetition of surges, the spiraling-out-of-control of populations struck by new Covid variations, but also standing together to protect one another.
