Biography: Carl Harrington
“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”
– Michelangelo
A leap forward in business (or life) is usually the result of an insight or a new way of looking at a familiar situation that releases the potential of a brand or a business. After graduating from Wharton with an MBA in Marketing, Carl developed his technical marketing skills and a knack for finding and releasing the “angels” of a business during 8 years at Kraft/General Foods. He led industry innovation in children’s cereal packaging with foil packaging, the 5th panel box and the “singing” box and won a GF President’s award and a Gold Effie for the most effective new product advertising for any new product in any category for Post Fruit & Fibre.
Moving on to other companies such as McCormick, Cadbury Schweppes and K’NEX, Carl continued to set businesses “free” through innovations such as:
- Replacing the tin can in the spice category with a new plastic bottle that is easier to use and better protects the spices
- Introducing “no fat” baking with applesauce instead of oil
- Creating a revolutionary line of shelf stable juices
- Changing the processing and packaging of apple juice from heavy, glass bottles to fridge friendly, plastic bottles that kids, the primary users, could pour themselves
- Winning 150 product quality awards for K’NEX including the introduction of solar powered K’NEX
